Can I Get a Sew-In If I Have Alopecia?

Can I Get a Sew-In If I Have Alopecia?

Hey Bestie,

happy sunday to ya!

One of the most heartbreaking things I hear behind the chair is:

"I don't think I can wear my hair anymore because I have alopecia."

If you've been diagnosed with alopecia—or you've simply noticed thinning edges, widening parts, or excessive shedding—I want you to know something:

You still have options.

But before you schedule that sew-in appointment, let's have an honest conversation.

First Things First: Not All Alopecia Is the Same

"Alopecia" simply means hair loss, but there are many different types.

Some of the most common include:

Traction Alopecia

Hair loss caused by excessive tension from tight hairstyles, extensions, braids, ponytails, or chemical damage.

Alopecia Areata

An autoimmune condition where the body's immune system attacks the hair follicles, often resulting in patches of hair loss.

Hormonal Hair Loss

Hair thinning that can occur due to hormonal changes, menopause, hysterectomy, thyroid disorders, or other medical conditions.

Medical-Related Hair Loss

Hair loss caused by medications, chemotherapy, nutritional deficiencies, stress, or underlying health concerns.

The type of alopecia you have matters because it helps determine which styling options may be safest for you.

Can You Still Get a Sew-In?

The honest answer?

It depends.

If your hair and scalp are healthy enough to support the weight and tension of extensions, a sew-in may still be an option.

However, if your scalp is inflamed, actively shedding, or your natural hair is extremely fragile, your stylist may recommend postponing extension services until the underlying issue is addressed.

And that's not rejection.

That's protection.

A Good Stylist Will Prioritize Your Hair Health

Over the years, I've had to tell clients:

"I love you, but I can't do this service today."

Not because I didn't want to help them.

But because preserving the hair they still had mattered more than making a quick sale.

A stylist who genuinely cares about healthy hair should always prioritize your long-term results over immediate gratification.

Alternatives That May Be Better Options

If a traditional sew-in isn't recommended, you still have beautiful choices available.

These may include:

  • Low-tension extension methods

  • Custom wigs

  • A paper protected quickweave

  • Medical Wigs

  • Scalp treatments and restoration plans

The goal isn't simply to cover the issue.

The goal is to help you feel confident while protecting your natural hair.

Don't Skip the Doctor

As much as I love hair, some hair concerns require a medical professional.

If you're experiencing sudden hair loss, significant shedding, scalp irritation, or changes following surgery or medication, please speak with your healthcare provider.

Blood work can reveal important clues.

Hormones matter.

Vitamin deficiencies matter.

Your overall health matters.

My Personal Experience

After my hysterectomy, I noticed something that genuinely scared me.

Every time I brushed my hair, there were clumps of strands coming out.

I deep conditioned.

I trimmed my ends.

I took vitamins.

I did everything I thought I was supposed to do.

Nothing changed.

Eventually, I went to my doctor.

After blood work, I discovered that my hormone levels had shifted significantly. I also had deficiencies that needed to be addressed.

Once I began focusing on my overall wellness—improving my nutrition, exercising consistently, prioritizing sleep, and working closely with my healthcare providers—I began noticing positive changes.

That experience reminded me that sometimes the answer isn't another product.

Sometimes the answer is understanding what's happening inside the body.

The Salon Cass Takeaway

Having alopecia does not mean you have to give up on feeling beautiful.

It doesn't mean you'll never wear extensions again.

And it certainly doesn't mean you're alone.

The key is finding the right approach for your specific situation.

Whether that's a sew-in, a topper, a wig, or a completely different plan, your confidence deserves protection just as much as your hair does.

Because healthy hair is always the goal.

And beautiful hair comes in many forms.
