Welcome Back to the Salon Cass Hair Report 💜
Heyyy!
I hope you had an amazing weekend!
Let's talk about one of the biggest arguments in the beauty world:
How often should you trim your hair?
I've heard it all.
Some women haven't had a trim in three years because they're trying to grow their hair.
Others are getting trims every six weeks because somebody told them that's what they're supposed to do.
So who's right?
Honestly?
Neither answer is right for everyone.
Let's talk about it.
First Things First: Trims Do Not Make Your Hair Grow Faster
I know.
Some of y'all are already clutching your pearls. 😂
But hair grows from the scalp.
Not the ends.
Trimming your hair does not speed up your growth rate.
What trims do help with is retaining healthy length.
And that's a huge difference.
What Is A Split End?
A split end happens when the protective outer layer of the hair becomes damaged and begins separating.
Once a split starts, it doesn't magically heal itself.
In fact, it can continue traveling higher up the hair shaft.
That's why ignoring damaged ends often creates bigger problems later.
Signs You May Need A Trim
You may be due for a trim if:
• Your ends feel rough
• Your hair tangles excessively
• Your style won't hold shape
• You notice tiny white dots on the ends
• Your ends appear thin or see-through
• You see obvious split ends
These are all signs that your ends may need some attention.
Every Head Of Hair Is Different
One of the biggest mistakes people make is following someone else's hair schedule.
Your favorite influencer might trim every 8 weeks.
That doesn't mean you should.
Your trim schedule depends on:
• Hair texture
• Chemical services
• Heat usage
• Daily maintenance
• Overall hair health
That's why professional evaluations matter.
Can You Grow Long Hair Without Trimming?
Sometimes.
But there's a catch.
If your ends remain healthy and you're not experiencing excessive breakage, you may not need frequent trims.
However, if your ends are splitting and breaking, avoiding trims can actually make your hair appear thinner over time.
Healthy ends matter.
My Professional Approach
After more than 20 years behind the chair, I don't automatically trim every client.
I evaluate the hair first.
Sometimes a client genuinely needs a trim.
Sometimes they don't.
I believe in trimming based on the condition of the hair—not just because the calendar says it's time.

The Goal Is Length Retention
Remember what we talked about last week?
Growth and retention are two different things.
If you're constantly breaking off the same amount you're growing, your hair may appear stuck at the same length.
Maintaining healthy ends helps protect the growth you've worked so hard to achieve.
My Opinion On Dusting
Sometimes a full trim isn't necessary.
A light dusting can help remove minor damage without removing significant length.
For clients focused on growing their hair, this can be a great option when appropriate.
Final Thoughts
The question isn't:
"How often should everyone trim their hair?"
The better question is:
"What does my hair need right now?"
Listen to your hair.
Pay attention to your ends.
And don't let fear of trims stop you from maintaining healthy hair.
