Heyy Bestie!
I hope you had an amazing weekend! Did you spend it getting your hair done, running errands, or relaxing with your favorite people?
Today we're talking about something I hear all the time behind the chair.
"Shaunda, I got a sew-in because I'm trying to grow my hair."
And honestly?
That's one of the biggest reasons women get sew-ins in the first place.
But here's the question nobody seems to ask:
Is your sew-in actually protecting your hair?
Because believe it or not, every sew-in is not a protective style.
I know, I know. Don't throw your edge brush at me just yet. 😂
Let's talk about it.
What Makes A Style Protective?
A protective style is designed to help protect your natural hair from daily manipulation, excessive heat, environmental stress, and breakage.
The goal isn't necessarily to grow your hair.
The goal is to help you retain length by reducing damage.
There's a difference.
Hair naturally grows from your scalp.
Protective styles help you keep the length you're growing.
When A Sew-In CAN Be A Protective Style
A properly installed sew-in can absolutely help you retain length.
Some of the benefits include:
• Less daily styling
• Less heat exposure
• Protection for your ends
• Reduced breakage from brushing and combing
• Easier maintenance for busy women
When installed and maintained correctly, sew-ins can be a fantastic option for women trying to preserve the health of their natural hair.
When A Sew-In Stops Being Protective
Now let's talk about the part nobody wants to hear.
A sew-in stops being protective when it's neglected.
I have seen women keep an install in for four months, five months, and sometimes even longer.
Bestie.
Please don't do that. 😂
Over time, your hair continues to shed, your scalp continues producing oil, and product buildup continues to accumulate.
Eventually, your hair needs attention.
A protective style should never become a neglected style.
The Biggest Mistake I See
One of the biggest mistakes I see is women completely forgetting about their natural hair once the extensions are installed.
Out of sight does not mean out of mind.
Your scalp still needs care.
Your natural hair still needs moisture.
Your braids still need attention.
Healthy extensions start with healthy natural hair underneath.
How To Moisturize Your Hair Under A Sew-In
One of my favorite ways to moisturize the scalp underneath a sew-in is by using an applicator bottle with a pointed nozzle.
This allows you to get directly between the braid rows without disturbing the install.
Depending on your needs, you may use:
• Lightweight moisturizers
• Scalp serums
• Leave-in conditioners
• Dermatologist-recommended treatments
If your scalp is flaky, itchy, or irritated, don't ignore it.
What If You're Using Medicated Shampoo?
Many of my clients deal with dandruff, dry scalp, psoriasis, or seborrheic dermatitis.
If your dermatologist has prescribed a medicated shampoo, you can still care for your scalp while wearing extensions.
A pointed applicator bottle can help direct shampoo exactly where it's needed.
And if you're unsure how to manage your scalp while wearing extensions, ask your stylist for guidance.
Here is a OTC medicated shampoo that I professionally recommend to help clear up a flaky scalp.
Signs It's Time To Remove Your Sew-In
Here are a few signs your install may be ready to come down:
• Excessive itching
• Heavy buildup
• Odor
• Matting
• Significant new growth
• Difficulty cleansing your scalp
Don't wait until your sew-in is begging for retirement. 😂
My Professional Opinion
After more than 20 years behind the chair, here's my honest answer.
A sew-in can absolutely be a protective style.
But the sew-in itself isn't doing the work.
Your maintenance is.
Healthy hair habits create healthy hair.
Not the extensions.
Not the braid pattern.
Not the bundles.
Your habits.
That's the real secret.
Final Thoughts
If you're wearing extensions right now, take a moment this week to think about what's happening underneath them.
Are you moisturizing your scalp?
Are you paying attention to buildup?
Are you scheduling maintenance appointments?
Are you protecting the hair you're trying so hard to grow?
Because a sew-in should support your healthy hair journey—not replace it.
Until Next Week, Bestie 💜
