The Client I Lost to Cancer: What She Taught Me About Beauty, Strength, and Living Life Now

Heyyy Beautiful,

Today's blog is a little different.

Usually, we talk about extensions, healthy hair, or the latest beauty trends.

But today, I want to tell you about someone special.

A client.

A friend.

A young woman who taught me one of the greatest lessons I've ever learned behind the chair.

Years ago, one of my clients was diagnosed with throat cancer.

She was very young.

Beautiful.

Full of life.

And like so many women, she had plans.

She had goals she wanted to accomplish, places she wanted to visit, and dreams she still wanted to pursue.

But cancer doesn't care about our timelines.

I remember sitting with her during appointments, listening to her talk about life, family, hopes of relocating to Japan, and the future.

She would always say , When I get better I am going out with you Shaunda lol...I always post the good times I have in Vegas and she wanted in. I wish she didn't wait...I wish she would have come out with me in her current condition as she was still able to walk around like normal.

Somewhere along the way, our relationship became more than hairstylist and client.

I genuinely cared about her...She was so positive and upbeat about her situation. She always smiled and said "Ohh I am just fine, I am going to beat this, I just worry about my father". She cared about everyone else feelings throughout her battle with cancer. A real angel.

I rooted for her.

I prayed for her.

I celebrated the good days with her and supported her through the difficult ones when treatments didn't go as planned...when her thick , beautiful curls started to become thin and fragile from chemotherapy.

When you've sat in someone's chair month after month, year after year, you become part of each other's lives.

Hair appointments become therapy sessions.

Celebrations.

Confessions.

Safe spaces.

And in the beauty industry, we have the privilege of walking alongside women through some of the most important chapters of their lives.

Eventually, my beautiful client lost her battle with cancer🕊️.

And for a long time, my heart hurt for all the things she didn't get to experience.

The trips she didn't get to take.

The goals she didn't get to reach.

The moments she thought she had more time for.

But as I reflected on her life, I realized she had given me an incredible gift.

She reminded me that life is happening right now.

Not someday.

Not when everything is perfect.

Not when we lose the weight.

Not when the kids get older.

Not when we finally feel "ready."

Now.!!

Book the trip now.

Take the photos now.

Start the business now.

Wear the outfit (if it fits lol) NOW.

Get the haircut you've been thinking about NOW.

Tell people you love them...you never know when that time will come.

Support your loved ones as much as you can...even a simple "you got this" goes a long way.

Celebrate the milestones.

Laugh loudly.

Live fully.

Because tomorrow isn't promised to any of us.

If you're currently walking through a cancer diagnosis, know this:

You are stronger than you realize.

Lean on your support system.

Allow people to love you.

Take things one day at a time.

And don't forget that your beauty has never been defined by your circumstances.

And if you know someone who is fighting this battle, show up for them.

Check in.

Listen.

Offer practical help.

Be present.

Sometimes, simply knowing you're not alone makes all the difference.

To my beautiful client, SABEL

Sister....Thank you for allowing me to be a small part of your journey.

Thank you for reminding me that life is precious and to cherish every moment and stay positive.

And thank you for teaching me to stop waiting for the perfect moment to start living.

You are deeply missed.

But you will never be forgotten.

With love,
