Heyy Friend,
I hope you've had a fabulous week (or maybe an even better weekend)! Today, we're talking about one of the most frustrating things that can happen when you're wearing extensions:
"Why are my bundles bunching up in the back?"
You know exactly what I'm talking about.
Your hair looked gorgeous when it was first installed. It was silky, bouncy, and flowing. Then, a few weeks later, you notice the nape area starting to feel rough, tangled, or matted.
Before you toss the hair in the trash or swear off extensions forever, let's talk about what could really be causing it.
1. Sleeping With Wet Hair
Going to bed with damp extensions is one of the quickest ways to create tangles.
When hair stays wet for an extended period of time, the strands can swell and rub together while you sleep, creating friction and matting.
Pro Tip: Always ensure your extensions are completely dry before bedtime. A loose braid or ponytail can also help minimize tangling overnight.
2. You're Not Brushing the Nape Area Daily
The nape of your neck experiences more friction than almost any other area of your hair.
Seatbelts, jackets, scarves, hoodies, and everyday movement can all contribute to bunching.
Using an extension-friendly brush to gently detangle the nape area each day can make a huge difference.
3. Product Buildup
Heavy oils, excessive leave-in products, and residue can cause the strands to stick together.
The result?
You guessed it—tangles.
Luxury hair still requires maintenance.
Using lightweight, professional-quality products can help maintain softness and movement.
4. Your Lifestyle Matters
Do you work out regularly?
Do you live in a humid climate?
Do you spend a lot of time outdoors?
Sweat, environmental factors, and friction all play a role in how your extensions behave.
What works beautifully for one woman may not work for another.
That's why choosing the right texture for your lifestyle is so important.
5. Could It Be the Hair Itself?
Before you immediately assume your extensions are poor quality, there's something else to consider:
The manufacturing process.
You may have heard the term Remy hair before.
Remy hair means that the cuticles are aligned and flowing in the same direction from root to tip.
When hair is properly sorted and processed, the cuticles lay flat, helping the hair remain smooth and manageable.
However, during the wefting process, even a few strands that are accidentally placed in the opposite direction can create friction within the bundle.
Those misaligned strands may cause:
-
Increased tangling
-
Bunching or matting
-
Roughness over time
-
More resistance during brushing
Here's the important part:
This can happen even with high-quality hair extensions.
The overall quality of the hair may still be excellent, but a small percentage of upside-down strands can contribute to tangling issues.
After nearly 30 years behind the chair, I've seen this happen firsthand.
It's one of the reasons why sourcing from reputable vendors and maintaining open communication with your supplier matters.
6. Not All Tangling Means Bad Hair
Sometimes it's the maintenance routine.
Sometimes it needs a deep conditioning treatment
sometimes it needs a trim!...It is human hair and developes split ends too!
Sometimes it's the texture selection.
And sometimes, it's simply a manufacturing issue involving a few strands within an otherwise beautiful bundle.
The good news?
Most tangling issues can be improved—or prevented altogether—once you understand what's causing them.
