Your Hairstylist Didn't Make Your Hair Fall Out... Maybe Your Hormones Did.

Your Hairstylist Didn't Make Your Hair Fall Out... Maybe Your Hormones Did.

Heyy Gorgeous!,

Happy sunday! I hope your week was fantastic and fabulous!

One of the hardest conversations I have behind the chair is this:

"My sew-in made my hair fall out." "My hair is getting thinner as I age"

And while there are absolutely situations where improper installation techniques can contribute to hair loss,or stressed untreated hair... sometimes the real culprit has nothing to do with your stylist at all.

Sometimes...

it's your body asking for help.

My Personal Experience

A few years ago, after having a hysterectomy, I noticed something that terrified me.

My hair was changing.

Before surgery, my hair was full and healthy. My edges were thriving. My temples were thick. I honestly never gave my hair a second thought.

Then, almost overnight, things shifted.

Every time I brushed my hair in the shower, I would pull out clumps and clumps of hair.

I panicked.

I trimmed my ends.

I deep conditioned.

I switched products.

I took vitamins.

I did everything I thought I was supposed to do.

Nothing worked.

That's when I decided to dig deeper.

The Bloodwork Changed Everything

After speaking with my doctor and getting bloodwork done, I discovered that my body needed support.

Because I had undergone a hysterectomy and only had one ovary remaining, my estrogen levels had dropped.

I was also deficient in several important nutrients.

My magnesium was low.

My Iron was low.

My potassium was low.

And my body was trying to tell me something through my hair and nails.

Once I consistently addressed what was happening internally, everything started to change.

Your Hair Is Often the Last To Receive Nutrients

Think about it.

Your body prioritizes keeping your heart beating, your lungs functioning, and your organs healthy.

Hair?

Hair isn't considered essential for survival.

So when your body is under stress or lacking nutrients, your hair often pays the price first.

Could It Be More Than Your Hairstyle?

Hair thinning and shedding can sometimes be linked to:

  • Hormonal changes
  • Hysterectomy recovery
  • Perimenopause and menopause
  • Low iron levels
  • Vitamin deficiencies
  • Thyroid conditions
  • Significant stress
  • Rapid weight loss
  • Lack of sleep
  • Certain medications

That's why I encourage women not to automatically blame themselves or their stylist.

Sometimes, your body simply needs additional support.

What Helped Me

Everyone's journey is different, but these are some of the things that helped me personally:

✓ Working closely with my healthcare provider

✓ Getting regular bloodwork done

✓ Addressing vitamin and mineral deficiencies

✓ Improving my sleep habits

✓ Drinking more water

✓ Exercising consistently to improve circulation

✓ Eating more nutrient-dense foods, including leafy green vegetables

I also chose to explore prescription treatment options under medical supervision.

I personally used oral minoxidil, which contributed to increased hair growth for me.

However, treatment decisions should always be discussed with your healthcare provider to determine what's appropriate for your specific situation.

Don't Ignore the Signs

If you're experiencing excessive shedding, thinning edges, widening parts, or changes in your hair density, please don't suffer in silence.

Hair can be emotional.

It can impact confidence.

But it can also be a messenger.

Sometimes it's telling us to slow down.

To rest.

To nourish ourselves.

To ask more questions.

The Salon Cass Takeaway

As hairstylists, we can recommend healthier practices and protective styling options.

But sometimes the answer isn't another deep conditioner.

Sometimes the answer is bloodwork.

If your hair has changed dramatically and you can't figure out why, schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider and advocate for yourself.

Because healthy hair doesn't just start with what you put on your head.

It often starts with what's happening inside your body.
